REGENSBURG - HISTORY AND CULTURE

Discover the magic and romance of Regensburg: Founded in 179 AD, Regensburg has a rich history from the Romans, the “First Reich which lasted 1,000 years, the Second Reich” and of course, the infamous “Third Reich.” Our walk through Regensburg’s old town covers all of these time periods – Roman remains, medieval architecture, historical tugs-of-war and insights into the city’s history and culture. Although each walk is slightly different and customized to the guest’s interests, we typically begin in the heart of Regensburg where it all started, on the banks of the Danube River. After hearing how the city’s history began, we set off to explore what I think are the most interesting aspects of Regensburg’s history – the Altes Rathaus (City Hall), St. Peter’s Dome (Cathedral of Saint Peter), and many of the city squares and historical buildings that lead to Regensburg being dubbed, “The most northern Italian city”. As we walk, we will discuss the local history and many local personalities who helped shape the city’s landscape and influenced the Regensburg of today. If you are interested in Food and beer, we can easily modify our schedule to include some local food and drink. With me as your guide, you get to decide!

JEWISH HISTORY OF REGENSBURG

As a New Yorker, I was surrounded by my Jewish friends, their culture, Jewish food, Jewish jokes and holidays. As I studied the history of Regensburg, I was fascinated to learn that Jews settled in Regensburg from the early Middle Ages, when Regensburg was a large and important city, and they played a significant role in its economic development. Regensburg’s Jewish community, one of the most important of that time in Germany, was situated in the center of the city. In 1519 the Jews were expelled from Regensburg and their neighborhood was completely destroyed. The area is now a city square, the "Neupfarrplatz". Excavations begun in 1995 revealed many well-preserved relics. Reminders of the 1200 years of Jewish history in Regensburg can be found in many corners of this medieval city. Come with me on this fascinating journey into the past and present of Regensburg’s rich Jewish history.
